Reject (拒絶人間, Kyozetsu Ningen?) is the fifth chapter of the Koe no Katachi manga and the final chapter of Volume 1.
Summary[]
During the junior high entrance ceremony, Kazuki Shimada tells everyone to avoid Shōya because he’s a bully, eventually leading students who went to different elementary schools to ask if he really made a girl transfer out. Shōya admits he did, causing him to become isolated. In the present, the story reveals that Shōya is now a 12th grader. Various stilted interactions with his classmates are shown, with Shōya projecting thoughts onto the words of his peers. He views them through a skewed perspective, believing they feel negatively about him as well. He claims to hate them for various reasons, though he hates himself the most for having these thoughts. It’s here where the “X’s” Shōya mentally places over other people originates.
Shōya admits to himself that he chose to isolate himself to not feel so lonely, recalling the time he traveled to Nagoya by himself during his second year of middle school. He bought a limited edition album which he tried talking to Kazuki and Keisuke Hirose about in school, although they only expressed disgust. Shōya threw away the album and began to believe there were things he could never achieve in life, assuming his future ahead to be a lonely and miserable one. He visualizes how he thinks his life will proceed, figuring that he should take care of any loose ends and plans on taking his own life.
In the present, Shōya tears the April section of his calendar in half, leaving the 15th as the final date. As days pass by, Shōya quits his job, cancels his phone contract, and sells almost all of his belongings. He places all of his money into an envelope meant for his mother, leaving it by her bedside before leaving the house. He arrives at the General Welfare Hall with the intention of finding Shōko Nishimiya, eventually catching her while she leaves her sign language class. He begins to cry seeing her again, though he stops himself and grabs her sleeve, finally taking the story back to the beginning of Chapter 01.
