The Right to be Here (会う資格, Au Shikaku?) is the ninth chapter in the Koe no Katachi manga and the fourth chapter of Volume 2.
Summary[]
Shōya failed to see Shōko again, although he’s become acquainted with a classmate named Tomohiro Nagatsuka, who retrieved his stolen bike the previous chapter. Shōya wonders how friendships start and if he and Tomohiro are now friends. He quickly learns that Tomohiro already views him as a friend after he’s invited to hang out after school. They catch a movie and eat at the mall, where Shōya asks Tomohiro what he thinks being friends means. He responds by asking Shōya if he really needs to define friendship, stating that defies words or logic, even after Shōya proposes his situation with Shōko as a vague hypothetical.
The next Tuesday, Shōya knocks on the door of Shōko’s sign language class, once again being gatekept by Yuzuru. Shōya tries to explain that he isn’t sure if he and Shōko are friends, although Yuzuru says he should leave if he’s just trying to make himself feel better. Before she can shut the door, Tomohiro appears and grabs Yuzuru by her hoodie, demanding that she let Shōya see Shōko. Tomohiro gets into a scuffle with Yuzuru, which catches the attention of everyone in the club, including Shōko. In embarrassment, Shōya runs away from the situation while Shōko follows after him.
At the Suimon Bridge, Shōko manages to catch up with Shōya, finally seeing him again after two weeks. Yuzuru and Tomohiro watch them from a balcony, with Tomohiro demanding that Yuzuru translate after he watches Shōya use sign language. Yuzuru mocks him at first before seriously translating what Shōya and her sister are saying.
Shōya expresses that he wanted to visit Shōko more, but wasn’t sure if he had the right to after everything he did when they were kids. He wasn’t sure if they were friends and had been mulling over it for the past two weeks. With a sincere smile, Shōko responds that she was thinking the same thing before pulling out a bag of bread for the fish, being surprised by the baguette Shōya brought. Yuzuru is annoyed by her sister’s words, wondering why she wants to bring Shōya into her life.
