Koe no Katachi (聲の形 The Shape of Voice) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yoshitoki Oima. Also known as A Silent Voice to many English readers.
It was originally published as a one-shot in the February 2011 issue of Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine. A remake of the story was published in Weekly Shōnen Magazine from August 6, 2013 until its run ended on November 19, 2014.
The story revolves around Nishimiya Shouko, an elementary school student whom has severe hearing loss. She transfers into a new school, where she is bullied by her classmates. Ishida Shouya, one of the bullies, goes to the point that she transfers to another school once again. As a result, he is ostracized and bullied himself, with no friends to speak of and no plans for the future. Years later, he sets himself on a path to redemption; to right the wrong he has inflicted onto both of their lives (mainly Shouko)
Koe no Katachi was at first a one-shot published in the February 2011 issue of Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine, later being serialized in the Weekly Shōnen Magazine as a remake on August 6, 2013. The series has ended with a total of seven volumes since the first tankōbon release on November 15, 2013.
Koe no Katachi was later adapted into an animated film produced by Kyoto Animation, directed by Naoko Yamada, and scripted by Reiko Yoshida. It was released on September 17, 2016.
